Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn effectively, work productively, and contribute to their community (WHO, 2022). It's essential to understand that mental health is more than merely the absence of mental illness; it encompasses our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. This aspect of health influences how we think, feel, and act, and it plays a crucial role in how we manage stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices (CDC, 2023). Both mental health and physical health are vital components of overall health.
More than 1 in 5 (19%) of U.S. adults experience some form of mental illness, which significantly impacts their mental health and overall mental well-being. Additionally, about 1 in 25 U.S. adults lives with a more serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression.
Adverse Childhood Experiences, such as trauma or a history of abuse (for example, child abuse, sexual assault, witnessing violence, etc.), can significantly impact mental health and contribute to mental illness. Additionally, experiences related to ongoing (chronic) medical conditions, such as cancer or diabetes, can also affect one's mental well-being. Biological factors, including chemical imbalances in the brain, play a crucial role as well. The use of alcohol or drugs can further exacerbate mental health issues. Moreover, prolonged feelings of loneliness or isolation can adversely influence mental well-being.
Mental illness does not discriminate; it can affect anyone, impacting their mental health and mental well-being, regardless of age, gender, geography, income, social status, race, ethnicity, religion/spirituality, sexual orientation, background, or any other aspect of cultural identity.
